Bike Friday Post
An ongoing series in which we profile Beacon’s bicycle riders and cover all aspects of bicycling in our town, from the best practices for riding on our roads to equipment choices and more.
Perhaps you’ve seen this deep magenta two-wheeled machine flash by on Main Street recently. Its owner is Courtney Velez, and she claims to have a nail polish that almost exactly matches the lustrous paint job.
Her boyfriend Max was planning to construct a ride for her using two bikes for donor parts, but that project went on the back burner when mom surprised her with a Schwinn Ladies Mifflin 24″ Hybrid Bike for her birthday this past May. The 24″ refers to the wheel size, and it makes perfect sense for riders on the petite side. (We’ll talk about wheel size and tires on the next Bike Friday.)
Courtney grew up in Beacon, left to see the world for a few years, and has been back in town since November. She has a couple of jobs, but her main gig is as a cashier for Beacon Natural Market, and she uses her Mifflin to commute every morning. She is also interested in street photography, and using the bicycle lets her explore and cover lots of ground. She promised to send the link to her photos, along with the name of the matching nail color, so we’ll add that as soon as we get it. Bike Beacon!
And Please Don’t Forget to Vote for Green Teens!!

The Mifflin is nicely appointed for transportation cycling with fenders, chain guard, wide tires and upright bars.

Courtney currently favors a back pack for necessities. Wigwam will look at other portage options in another post.
